Crested Lark
Galerida cristata
The Crested Lark is a characteristic bird of dry open ground, roadsides and lightly vegetated plains. Its pointed crest, sturdy bill and melodic song help distinguish it from other larks.
Habitat & Adaptation
Around Merzouga, Crested Larks favour open, dry ground with sparse vegetation, including track edges and stony or compact sandy plains. Their streaked brown plumage blends with the ground as they search for seeds and insects, making slow, careful scanning more effective than a close approach.
Identification
Look for the long, pointed crest, sturdy, slightly downcurved bill, streaked upperparts and pale underparts. Compare posture, movement and song to distinguish the Crested Lark from similar larks, always observing from a respectful distance.

Behaviour & Activity
Crested Larks are active by day and usually feed on the ground. Patient observation may reveal walking, short runs, pauses to scan their surroundings and singing from an exposed spot, without interrupting their natural behaviour.

Wildlife Photography
For photographers, the Crested Lark is best approached with patience and distance. Soft light and natural behaviour are more valuable than a close approach, especially in exposed desert habitat.
Responsible Guiding
During Birding Merzouga outings, suitable habitat for the Crested Lark can be checked carefully using local knowledge while keeping disturbance to a minimum and respecting the bird’s natural behaviour.
