Cream-colored Courser
Cursorius cursor
The Cream-colored Courser is a ground-dwelling bird of open, dry plains around Merzouga. Its sandy plumage, long pale legs and quick runs punctuated by sudden stops suit the sparsely vegetated desert terrain.
Habitat & Adaptation
On gravelly hamada, firm sandy flats and sparsely vegetated plains, its pale plumage helps it blend into the ground. It searches for insects and other invertebrates, often moving in short runs followed by pauses.
Identification
Look for its upright posture, long pale legs, slightly downcurved bill, blue-grey crown and nape, and bold black-and-white head stripes that meet towards the nape. Its quick runs and sudden stops are also characteristic; observe from a respectful distance.
