Preparing for the Saharan Adventure
A birdwatching trip to the Sahara is an adventure of a lifetime, but proper preparation is key to ensuring a comfortable, safe, and successful experience.
Here is our practical guide to preparing for your desert birding journey:
1. Best Time to Plan Your Visit
For the greatest variety of species, plan your trip between March and May (spring migration) or October and November (autumn migration). If you prefer cooler and more comfortable weather, winter (December to February) is also an excellent season.
2. Essential Clothing & Protection
The desert sun is extremely strong, while temperatures can drop rapidly after sunset.
Pack lightweight, breathable long-sleeved shirts and trousers to protect your skin.
A wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential.
Bring a warm jacket or fleece for early morning birdwatching and cool desert evenings.
3. Photography & Optics Gear
Binoculars:A pair of 8×42 or 10×42 binoculars is ideal for spotting birds across the dunes and open plains.
Camera Lenses:A telephoto lens can be useful for photographing birds from a comfortable distance; longer focal lengths such as 400 mm may be helpful depending on your equipment and photography style.
Bring several spare batteries, as extreme heat and cool mornings may reduce battery performance.
4. Enjoying Your Desert Birdwatching Experience
Drinking water is provided during our guided birdwatching tours, allowing you to relax and focus on enjoying your experience.
Take your time to appreciate the peaceful desert landscapes and discover the remarkable birdlife of Merzouga. Exploring with a knowledgeable local guide makes your experience even more enjoyable and rewarding.
With a little preparation and a spirit of discovery, you can enjoy the natural beauty of the Moroccan Sahara and create unforgettable birdwatching memories.
