Every season offers a different birdwatching experience. Discover which species arrive during migration, which birds breed locally, and the best months to plan your visit for unforgettable sightings.
The Dynamic Saharan Calendar
The desert is a dynamic environment that changes dramatically throughout the year. The birdlife of Merzouga is highly seasonal, driven by continental migration patterns and local weather conditions.
Here is what you can expect to observe during each season:
Spring (March to May) – The Peak of Migration
Spring is an important migration period in the Merzouga region, when many birds moving north between Africa and Europe can be observed. Oases and seasonal lakes become busy resting stops for colorful flycatchers, warblers, herons, and waders, alongside active local breeding species.
Summer (June to August) – Resilient Desert Breeders
While the temperatures are high, summer is a fascinating time to observe the true survivors of the desert. Dedicated desert specialists like the Desert Sparrow, Cream-colored Courser, and various sandgrouse are highly active, feeding their fledglings and gathering at waterholes.
Autumn (September to November) – The Return Journey
Autumn brings the southward migration. It is an excellent time to observe raptors soaring over the dunes and plains, as well as young birds on their first long journey. The desert takes on a peaceful, golden atmosphere.
Winter (December to February) – Desert Residents & Overwintering Birds
Winter is characterized by comfortable daytime temperatures and crisp nights. It is the perfect season to focus on local resident species and observe overwintering birds from Europe that choose the mild Saharan climate.
Plan your visit according to your target species, and let us help you design the perfect itinerary for your preferred season.
