Explore Merzouga's most rewarding birdwatching locations, from the famous Erg Chebbi dunes to seasonal lakes, palm groves, rocky plateaus, dry wadis, and less-visited local birding areas that benefit from local knowledge.
Merzouga's Distinct Ecosystems
Merzouga is famous for its towering sand dunes, but the surrounding region holds a surprising variety of distinct ecosystems. To make the most of your birdwatching trip, it is essential to know where different species gather.
Here are the primary birdwatching hotspots explored during our professional tours.
1. Dayet Srij (The Seasonal Lake)
Located just west of Merzouga, this temporary lake becomes a magnet for migratory waterbirds whenever it fills with water. It offers the iconic sight of pink flamingos wading in front of the massive orange dunes of Erg Chebbi, creating excellent opportunities for birdwatching and photography when conditions are suitable.
2. The Rocky Hammada & Rocky Escarpments
The stony desert plains surrounding the dunes may appear lifeless at first, yet they provide ideal habitat for desert larks, wheatears, and coursers. The rocky escarpments are also excellent places to search for nesting raptors and the impressive Pharaoh Eagle-Owl.
3. Palm Groves & Oasis Gardens
The traditional oasis gardens, irrigated by ancient water systems, create lush islands of shade and moisture within the desert. These habitats attract migrating passerines, warblers, bee-eaters, and many resident species throughout the year.
4. Dry Wadis & Tamarisk Scrub
Dry riverbeds lined with tamarisk trees are essential feeding and resting areas for many desert birds. They are also among the best places to search for the beautifully camouflaged Egyptian Nightjar resting on the desert floor during daylight hours.
Exploring these diverse habitats with local knowledge can help you choose suitable areas according to the season, weather, and recent bird activity, improving your chances of observing Merzouga's remarkable birdlife.
