Explore seasonal migration patterns, field observations, and notable bird movements across southeastern Morocco.
A Celestial Highway over the Sahara
The sky above Merzouga is a major highway for bird migration. Situated between the Mediterranean and West Africa, southeastern Morocco lies along important migration routes used by many birds traveling between Europe and Africa.
Field observations during the migration seasons help us understand how bird activity changes with weather, habitat conditions, and the time of year.
The Great Saharan Crossing
For migratory birds, crossing the Sahara is one of the most perilous stages of their annual journey. Small migratory birds face demanding journeys across large areas of desert. Oases, vegetation, and seasonal wetlands around Merzouga can provide valuable places to rest and feed during migration.
Recent Sightings & Rarities
Depending on wind patterns and weather fronts, the desert occasionally hosts rare and unexpected visitors. Weather and wind conditions can occasionally bring unusual or less expected species to the region, including raptors and waders using suitable habitats such as Dayet Srij.
Seasonal Flight Paths
Each week during migration season, the dominant species change. You might see flocks of European Bee-eaters filling the air with their colorful feathers and cheerful calls one week, followed by a wave of migrating raptors the next.
Field notes can help illustrate how migration changes through the season and which habitats are most active at different times.
