3-Day Merzouga Desert Birding Adventure
Hidden Birds of the Desert
Spending three days birdwatching around Merzouga gives us the freedom to explore the desert at a relaxed pace and dedicate more time to the species and habitats that make this part of southeastern Morocco special. Our birding days take us around Erg Chebbi and through small seasonal lakes, sand dunes, dry riverbeds, palm groves, rocky areas, desert plains, and quiet hidden spots known by locals.
The itinerary is not fixed to the same route every day. Instead, we choose the most promising areas according to current conditions and bird activity. Early mornings are particularly rewarding, and traveling by 4×4 helps us reach remote locations where we can stop, scan the open landscape, and explore suitable habitats on foot.
During the three days, our main target species can include Desert Sparrow, Egyptian Nightjar, Greater Hoopoe Lark, African Desert Warbler, Cream-colored Courser, Crowned Sandgrouse, Spotted Sandgrouse, Fulvous Babbler, Kestrel Falcon, Yellow-browed Warbler, Desert Lark, Crested Lark, Trumpeter Finch, Great Grey Shrike, Eurasian Stone-curlew, Black Wheatear, House Sparrow, Desert Wheatear, Pharaoh Eagle Owl, and more. Depending on the season, we may also encounter migrating birds passing through the region, making every outing slightly different.
There is no need to rush from one location to another. We can spend longer at productive birding sites, wait quietly when necessary, and allow time for photography. This approach is especially useful when searching for shy or well-camouflaged desert species.
A simple Berber picnic in nature is part of each day, giving us time to rest before continuing our exploration. Whether you are discovering Saharan birds for the first time or already have experience in the field, these three days offer a varied birdwatching experience surrounded by the silence, open landscapes, and unique wildlife of the Merzouga desert.

Daily Program
The tour route may be adjusted throughout the day based on bird activity, seasonal conditions, and weather to provide the best possible birdwatching experience.
We start early in the morning from Merzouga with Brahim, a local birding guide who knows the desert and its birdlife well. Traveling by 4×4, we explore different natural habitats around the area, including small lakes, dry riverbeds, palm groves, rocky areas, and open desert landscapes. We focus our search on suitable natural areas where our target birds are most likely to be found, exploring on foot whenever needed.
Our route takes us to carefully selected birdwatching areas, including seasonal lakes, hidden wetlands, palm groves, dry riverbeds, rocky outcrops, and open desert plains. These varied habitats offer excellent opportunities to observe some of the most remarkable bird species of the Sahara, including Desert Sparrow, Greater Hoopoe Lark, Cream-colored Courser, Desert Wheatear, African Desert Warbler, Trumpeter Finch, and—depending on the season—many other species. Across the three-day tour, depending on the season and bird activity, we also search for Kestrel Falcon, Yellow-browed Warbler, Desert Lark, Crested Lark, Great Grey Shrike, Eurasian Stone-curlew, Black Wheatear, House Sparrow, and Pharaoh Eagle Owl.
One of the highlights of the morning is watching sandgrouse gathering at seasonal waterholes, where they arrive to drink in the calm desert atmosphere. The soft golden light creates exceptional conditions for wildlife photography and unforgettable birdwatching moments.
Enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch at a carefully selected local restaurant, where you can relax, taste authentic regional cuisine, and recharge before continuing your afternoon birdwatching adventure.
In the afternoon, we continue exploring new birding sites, with the day's route carefully adjusted according to recent bird sightings and seasonal conditions. At the end of the day, we return to Merzouga, where you will spend the night in a traditional guesthouse and rest before the second day of your birdwatching adventure.
As the sun rises on the second day, we set out once again to explore new birdwatching locations across the Merzouga desert. This day gives us the opportunity to venture deeper into the Sahara, visiting peaceful desert plains, dry riverbeds, traditional farms, remote tracks, and hidden birding spots known only to experienced local guides.
Depending on the season, we search for a variety of fascinating desert birds, including the Egyptian Nightjar, Fulvous Babbler, Tristram's Warbler, Desert Sparrow, Crowned Sandgrouse, and Spotted Sandgrouse. With a bit of luck, we may also encounter impressive birds of prey such as the Lanner Falcon or the Barbary Falcon soaring above the desert landscape.
Throughout the day, we take our time at each location, allowing plenty of opportunities for birdwatching, wildlife photography, and observing natural behavior in complete tranquility. Around midday, we pause in a peaceful desert setting to enjoy a traditional Berber picnic before continuing our exploration during the afternoon. The route is adjusted according to weather conditions, lighting, and the latest bird activity to ensure the best possible birdwatching experience.
As the day draws to a close, we head to our peaceful desert camp, where you will spend the night surrounded by the tranquility of the Sahara.
On the third morning, we wake up at our desert camp and begin the final day around sunrise, when bird activity is at its peak. After breakfast, we set out to explore selected birding areas around Merzouga, focusing on habitats and species that we have not yet covered during the previous two days.
We continue through a variety of natural environments, including sand dunes, desert plains, dry valleys, rocky areas, palm groves, seasonal water sources, and oasis habitats. Depending on recent sightings and the season, we may focus on species such as the African Desert Warbler, Trumpeter Finch, Desert Sparrow, and other characteristic birds of the Sahara.
This final day gives us ample time for quiet observation and photography, while the route remains flexible so that we can revisit promising locations or search for species you still wish to see. Around midday, we pause for a traditional Berber picnic in a peaceful desert setting before continuing our final birdwatching session.
In the afternoon, we gradually make our way back to Merzouga, concluding the tour at around 17:00 after three full days of birdwatching across the diverse landscapes of the Moroccan Sahara.

Yes. Birdwatching in Merzouga is possible throughout the year because the area is home to resident desert species that can be seen in every season. In spring, especially from March to May, the region also welcomes many migratory birds moving north. Another migration period takes place in autumn, from September to November. At other times of the year, Merzouga remains rewarding for local desert species and birds associated with seasonal wetlands.
