We start early in the morning from Merzouga with Brahim, a local birding guide who knows the desert and its birdlife well. Traveling by 4×4, we explore different natural habitats around the area, including small lakes, dry riverbeds, palm groves, rocky areas, and open desert landscapes. We focus our search on suitable natural areas where our target birds are most likely to be found, exploring on foot whenever needed.
Throughout the day, we search for our main target species, including Yellow-browed Warbler, Desert Lark, Crested Lark, African Desert Warbler, Trumpeter Finch, Fulvous Babbler, Greater Hoopoe Lark, Crowned Sandgrouse, Great Grey Shrike, Cream-colored Courser, House Sparrow, Desert Sparrow, Pharaoh Eagle Owl, and Kestrel Falcon. The route remains flexible, allowing us to choose the best locations according to the season, recent sightings, and bird activity.
Around midday, we stop for lunch at a local café, keeping the break simple so we can make the most of our time in the field. Even during the warmer hours, we continue checking suitable habitats, as there are still opportunities to find some of our target birds.
Later in the afternoon, as the temperature begins to drop, bird activity increases again. We continue exploring different desert areas, looking for species we may have missed earlier and observing birds as they become more active and begin feeding before evening.
After making the most of the final birding hours, we return to Merzouga, ending a full day of exploring the birds and natural habitats of the Sahara.

Yes. Birdwatching in Merzouga is possible throughout the year because the area is home to resident desert species that can be seen in every season. In spring, especially from March to May, the region also welcomes many migratory birds moving north. Another migration period takes place in autumn, from September to November. At other times of the year, Merzouga remains rewarding for local desert species and birds associated with seasonal wetlands.
